FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT GUIDE

 

No previous experience in the language or study was more than 5 years ago   

Ø       FRE 101, SPA 101

 

2 years HS or 3 years with Regents Level B exam score less than 80%,___or first semester college level     

 

Ø       FRE 102, SPA 102, GER 102

OR

Ø       Take the CLEP Exam (students with 3+ years of Regents high school Spanish or French or language experience may earn credits by taking the CLEP proficiency exam³).

 

3 years (Level B exam 80% or better)  or 4-6 years HS level foreign language study at any passing grade

Ø       SPA 201,  FRE 201

OR

Ø       Take the CLEP Exam (students with 3+ years of high school Spanish or French or language experience may earn up to 12 college credits by taking the CLEP proficiency exam³).

OR

Ø       Cross-register at PSUNY

 

Non-coursework  language experience (e.g., family background or extended stay in a foreign country)

Ø       Take the CLEP Exam (students with  native Spanish or French or language skills may earn up to 12 college credits by taking the CLEP proficiency exam³).

OR

Ø       Cross-register at PSUNY in an advanced level course

 

 

*Notes: 

1.       EDUCATION MAJORS are required to complete a six credit hour 101-102 sequence or any three credit hour course at the 201 level or above in a foreign language for NYS certification.

 

2.       TRANSFER PREPARATION - Students planning to continue their education beyond CCC should refer to the specific foreign language requirements of the college to which they plan to

transfer.  SUNY Plattsburgh will require  three credits at the 102 level or above starting Fall 04.

 

3.  CREDIT BY EXAM -Students who are proficient in a language (3+ years of high school

     French or Spanish or other experience) may earn up to 12 credits by taking the CLEP  

     proficiency exam which is offered several times every semester at the Lifelong 

     Learning Center at PSUNY.   ** For information on test dates and how to register,

     students must call 564-2050.

 

                        4.  If students studied their language 5 or more years ago, they may enroll in a

      beginning level course
