Welcome to English 094!

This writing course is designed to help students develop the writing skills they will need in college, and, more specifically, to prepare them for English 101.  The course focuses on the writing process and developing writing skills in two areas:  out-of-class compositions and in-class essay tests.  Students learn to write short papers that are clear, concise, unified, and relatively free of mechanical and grammatical problems.

Students must earn a "C" or better to pass the course and progress on to English 101.  Near the end of the course, students will complete a timed writing which will be evaluated by the English Department to assess the writer's preparedness to move on to English 101.

Course Objectives:  Through participation in class activities, doing homework and reading assignments, and completing short papers, students will

1.  draw on their own experience and other sources to complete their assigned writing.,

2.  use an effective process by which they can plan, draft, revise, and edit short papers,

3.  improve their control of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary,

4.  distinguish between correct sentences and non-sentence forms,

5.  begin to recognize clear, effective writing,

6.  write successful short compositions in class within the confines of a time limit,

7.  exhibit the ability to think critically and analytically and to reason logically in their writing.

8.  recognize the application of composition skills from this course to other writing situations.

You need a copy of the composition handbook The Prentice Hall Reference Guide for this course.

It is available in the college bookstore.
