Using Journals

Working in pairs, find an article (following my instructions). Answer the questions below.  Write you answers on a separate piece of paper. After this class, type up your answers and turn in.

  1. Cite the article using APA style:

  2. Using the abstract only, how many of the questions below can you answer?  Which ones will you have to read the article to answer?

  3. What previous research, particular theory or personal observation formed the basis of the authors' research question?  (Found in the first few paragraphs of the article.)  Briefly describe it.

  4. State the hypothesis the author(s) tested.

  5. What population was studied?  Is this a representative sample of that population?

  6. How was data collected?  (Interview? Observation? Psychological tests? Survey?…)

  7. How did the authors test the hypothesis? (correlation, statistical models, experiment…?)

  8. What were their findings?

  9. Do you feel the findings are generalizable to all people in the age group/population studied?  Why or why not?

 

APA Style  Quick Reference

For articles:

Author (year) Title. Journal name.  Volume.  Number.  Pages. [Electronic version]  

For books:

Author (year) Title. Publisher.  City.  Pages.

Authors are listed by last name and first initial in the order in which they appear in the journal or book, or is alphabetical order.

 

 

 

 

When you find a source, write down the above information immediately.  Take notes as your read.  Do not write your paper with an article in front of you.  This invites plagiarism.  In the body of your paper indicate the source of your information like this:  (author, year)
