Biological Safety in the Laboratory

 

Non-Latex Gloves - Pick gloves that are the right size and type (see APP. IV) Aprons are available for students and Faculty. Lab coats are supplied for Faculty only.

Sharps Container - use when disposing of scalpel blades, needles or anything that isn't glass and might poke through a red biohazard bag BioHazard Waste (aka Regulated Medical Waste ) - the plastic buckets are for pipettes 
 
Splash-proof Goggles - protect 
eyes from flying particles and from 
splashed liquids
Hot/Cold Mitts - available in different materials for different uses.
Look for the labeled drawers.
 
BioSafety Cabinet - protects user from organisms being worked with as well as protecting the organism from the outside contamination. Equipped with UV Sterilizing lights. Hospital Disinfectant - used to sanitize work surfaces.  Works best when surface is left wet.

LIVE CULTURES - must be stored in refrigerators with the biohazard symbol In rooms without dedicated biohazard bins use this bucket to place biohazard waste.

Emergency Gas Shut Off - use in an emergency if the gas cannot be shut 
off at the bench top.
All used gloves should be placed in these receptacles.
NOT ALL rooms have these, for those rooms use General Waste.
